Ramon Cancino, M.D.

Ramon Cancino, MD, MBA, MS, FAAFP is an Associate Professor/Clinical in the Department of Family & Community Medicine at UT Health San Antonio, Director of the UT Health Physicians Primary Care Center, Senior Medical Director of Medical Management, and co-Chair of the Mays Cancer Center/UT Health San Antonio Joint Cancer Prevention and Screening Committee. He oversees seven primary care locations delivering patient-centered team-based care to the diverse patient population of San Antonio and South Texas. Practices are staffed by academic primary care clinicians, including family medicine and internal medicine clinicians, pediatricians, primary care sports medicine physicians, geriatricians, clinical psychologists, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. He works closely with senior leadership to guide primary care and value-based care strategy and oversees primary care medical directors who lead UT Health San Antonio’s primary care practices in a team-based model of care. He oversees cancer prevention and screening activities at UT Health San Antonio and co-leads a committee made up of every medical specialty involved with cancer screening with a focus on the health equity issues affecting our community. He currently oversees a multi-disciplinary project to enhance lung cancer screening in partnership with American Cancer Society and co-leads an effort to improve chronic disease management for patients undergoing active cancer treatment.

Prior to working at UT Health San Antonio, he was chief medical officer at a federally qualified health center in Boston, MA. While there, he helped achieve NCQA PCMH accreditation, developed and implemented programs to integrate behavioral health and HIV/AIDS care into primary care, expanded primary care access, enhanced population health management programs for chronic disease, substance abuse, and high-risk patient populations, developed a quality improvement program which drew national attention from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and developed local standards for measuring and reporting quality metrics to local, state, federal, and private entities.

He received his medical degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University. He completed a family medicine residency at Mayo Clinic. He received a Master of Science in health services research from Boston University School of Public Health and a Master of Business Administration from University of Texas at San Antonio. He has been invited to speak and teach his work in multiple local, state, and national forums, including the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, Academy Health, Mayo Clinic, Boston University School of Medicine, the American Cancer Society, and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
